This renovation began with a beloved traditional home and a desire to let it breathe. We opened the once–cottage-style kitchen, transforming it into a generous and functional heart of the house, complete with a hard-working island built for everything from prep work to after-dinner dancing. Mixed tones, layered textures, and thoughtfully chosen Devol hardware give the space a quietly confident character.

The homeowner’s impeccable eye for art, florals, and objects informed every choice; the architecture steps back just enough to let her curated world shine.

A redundant hallway was reimagined and repositioned to become the home’s new artery, gracefully separating private spaces from public ones and creating chances for “one-off moments”—a softly lit study overlooking the courtyard, intimate sightlines, and small pockets of calm.

Outside, a new courtyard wrapped in a sculptural brick-and-wood screen offers a museum-like sense of arrival. The plan now includes a serene additional primary suite to support aging in place or welcome long-term guests, and a jewel-box powder room fully wrapped in tile. Every gesture was made to preserve the home’s soul while reorienting it toward longevity, livability, and beauty.

Nisha Mary Prasad, AIA

Hi! I’m Nisha Mary Prasad. I’m a registered architect in North Carolina and New York, and I’m passionate about creating spaces that feel as good as they look. My work spans architecture, interior design, and urban design—bringing together beauty, function, and a sense of ease.

I like to design spaces that smile back—warm, welcoming environments with a clear point of view and a sense of character.

For the past 15 years, I’ve also taught part-time at architecture and interior design universities and will serve as President of the AIA Winston-Salem Chapter in 2026—continuing my commitment to building community and supporting professional growth.

With more than sixteen years of experience across New York City, Miami, and Winston-Salem, my work includes soulful homes, thoughtful additions, and a range of commercial environments—from workplaces to hospitality and retail. No matter the project, I always begin by listening. By taking the time to understand each client’s goals, I’m able to shape spaces that feel distinctly their own—modern or timeless, refined or relaxed, but always deeply personal and thoughtfully lived-in.
